M6 Junction 17

A bid has been put in for government ‘pinch point’ funding for improvements to junction 17. The government will announce in the autumn whether the bid is successful and then improvements could be implemented by 2014.

The plans envisage traffic lights at the end of the south bound slip road (on the Holmes Chapel side of the junction) and a roundabout at the end of the north bound slip road (on the Sandbach side of the junction).

Cllr Sam Corcoran, Labour Councillor for Sandbach Heath and East said

“I am delighted to see these proposals coming forward. I have been working on these proposals, with fellow Sandbach councillors and council staff, for some time. Many different proposals were considered and detailed computer modelling has identified these proposals as the best and most cost effective solution. We must now wait until the autumn to see if the government accepts our proposals.”

Cllr Margaret Ranger, Holmes Chapel Labour Councillor said,

“This is good news, but there will be drawbacks to the scheme. The main advantage is that it will be easier to come off the motorway at J17, so we should see a reduction in the number of lorries coming through Holmes Chapel. The main drawback is that the wait to turn right off Holmes Chapel Road is likely to increase, as there are no proposed improvements at this junction and the level of traffic is likely to increase. Nevertheless the proposals are welcome. We have waited a long time for some action on J17 and I congratulate Cllr Sam Corcoran on his effectiveness as a local Cheshire East councillor.”
