Thomas Street Car Park

Cheshire East Council is finally recognising that it made a big mistake in imposing parking charges on Crewe and has moved to reduce charges on Thomas Street car park.

There is extensive evidence that car parking charges deter shoppers. The council should be acting to boost Crewe Town centre and Crewe market.

At present the Thomas Street car park is empty, but the roads nearby are full of parked cars, causing inconvenience for local residents. Local Labour councillors opposed the introduction of charges and have continued to campaign against car parking charges

Cllr Chris Thorley, Labour Councillor for Crewe East said,

“This reduction in charges is too little and too late. Thomas Street car park should be a Free car park so that low paid shop workers are able to park all day, everyday, all week free. We are talking about mostly minimum wage works and what a huge chunk £30 a month of car parking charges is to such low paid workers.”

Cllr Sam Corcoran, Labour Councillor for Sandbach Heath & East said,

“I fought hard to keep parking free in Sandbach because I know what harm parking charges would have done to the town centre. Even after a strong local campaign, in the end it was legal difficulties over Scotch Common that stopped the Conservatives imposing parking charges in Sandbach.”
